Heidi Warr Orbiting Waves
Heidi began her training at Yeovil College on the Art and Design course, it giving her a good foundation of skills with different art mediums. When she left college she was employed at Dennis Chinaworks in Somerset, initially to glaze pots and then moving on to become a decorator. Heidi loved the creativity of decorating and over the years progressed to the position of principal decorator. She feels privileged to know that some of her finest pieces of decoration have sold for thousands of pounds at Bohnams Auction House. Whilst decorating was exciting and fulfilling, Heidi's real passion was for designing - she felt like she was bursting with design ideas so began to create her own ceramic artwork.
All pieces are Limited Edition, made, thrown, decorated by Heidi in Somerset.
Orbiting Waves Black and White Sphere 5" limited edition number 6 of 9
Inspiration; 'This is a hand thrown spherical piece using slip-trailing and black and white shades or pastel blue colours to depict the ocean in all its glory.
I was inspired to create this design because of the stirring feelings I observed within myself resulting from gazing at a stormy sea. I was memorised by the sheer power of the ocean as each waved came ashore, crashing like thunder. One after the other, each with its own strength and purpose. In the Orbiting Waves design I sought to capture the sense of movement arising from a turbulent sea.
One of the design challenges was to choose the right shades of colour to use on the rolling waves. After much experimentation, I decided that a gentle mix of blues and greens worked perfectly to convey the sense of movement I was seeking to depict. To detail the powerful nature of that movement I created waves with a visible crest. I also wanted to capture the essence of the ocean as night fell, which I achieved through the use of black and white and delicate shading.
